When to order a made-to-order robe for Christmas

Work back from the maker's own two timings, not from a generic shipping estimate. For a Merry Jammies robe that means up to 2 months to make, then 8–14 business days to ship. Added together, the safe cutoff for Christmas delivery is the first week of October.

Made-to-order is not the same as slow shipping, and confusing the two is how people miss Christmas. A stocked item has one clock: how long the courier takes. A made-to-order item has two, and the first one is much longer than the second.

The two clocks

Making. Allow up to 2 months. Your robe is cut, lined and wired for your order. Nothing is pulled off a shelf, because there is no shelf.

Shipping. 8–14 business days once it is made, tracked door to door. That applies to the United States, Canada, and the UK and Europe alike.

Doing the arithmetic

Two months of making plus up to 14 business days in transit is roughly 80 days from order to doorstep at the outer edge. Count 80 days back from 25 December and you land on 6 October. That is the date to work to.

Most orders arrive sooner than the outer edge. But a Christmas gift is the wrong place to bet on the average, so plan against the longest time the maker publishes, not the shortest.

What if you're reading this in November?

Then a made-to-order robe is a January present, and the honest move is to treat it as one. Some people order anyway and wrap a printed card on the day — the robe arrives in the depths of winter, which is arguably when it is most wanted. What you should not do is order in December and hope.

Why it takes two months at all

Because holding finished stock and making to order are opposite businesses. Stock means guessing months in advance how many robes people will want, then discounting whatever you guessed wrong. Made to order means every robe that exists has someone waiting for it. The trade is time, and the two months is where it goes.

You get a tracking number the moment it ships. Delays can occasionally happen and may alter these estimates. Orders outside the US may also be charged import VAT or GST and a carrier handling fee on delivery — that is set by your country, not by us, and customs delays are outside our control.

Every robe is made to order.
